Job Description

The non-secure substance abuse treatment center (Center of Hope), operated by the Salvation Army, is a 24/7 facility. Therefore, there are several shifts available including nights and weekends.

JOB SUMMARY:

Monitors the activity of residents on an assigned shift ensuring accountability, safety, security and compliance to facility rules; monitors client behavior and serves as liaison between client and counselor communicating pertinent information; administers drug/alcohol testing as required; maintains accurate and complete records and logs containing pertinent information regarding facility occupancy and client accountability.

Conducts facility check upon arrival ensuring all is in order prior to accepting responsibility of shift.

Enforces house rules, completes incident reports for any violation and monitors disciplinary actions.

Conducts routine head count of residents documenting residents in and out of the facility.

Instructs and monitors clients in the proper procedure for completing sign-in and sign-out sheets; ensures clients are aware of their sign out times and their return times; observes for the introduction of contraband items searching all incoming packages and when necessary conducts pat searches of residents.

Ensures that clients keep their living quarters neat and clean; ensures that clients have proper bedding, supplies, meal tickets, and laundry tokens.

Records and communicates pertinent information or instructions; informs the relief shift of the same; inputs client information into computer and generates client lists.

Answers and records all telephone calls to facility during assigned shift; telephones clients on furlough and records calls from clients reporting into facility.

Monitors visitation for approved residents ensuring that visitors are authorized and have adequate identification.

Monitors clients during free or recreation time.

Coordinates and monitors clients performing cleaning detail; assists in gathering work materials.

Collects urine samples from clients for alcohol/drug testing.

Collects keys, beepers and other unauthorized items and stores in safe place until appropriate time for release.

Prepares weekly sign out sheets indicating place of employment and social activities; verifies information with counselors.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Attempts to bring about positive changes in residents" attitudes, behavior and habit pattern through personal examples and by encouraging residents to participate in worthwhile activities.

Assists in conducting routine fire drills.

Monitors residents" behavior observing for the use of alcohol/drugs and administering appropriate test if suspected or required as a condition of residency.

Assists in the initial orientation of new residents, providing bed linen, clothing and vouchers, and explaining rules and regulations, etc.; prepares resident for initial orientation with counselor.

Maintains medical log and supervises the dispensing of medication to clients documenting the same on appropriate forms; ensures medicine remains under lock and personal observation.

Performs emergency life saving procedures in extreme emergencies.

Monitors all resident telephone calls and ensures clients do not exceed the 15-minute time limit and that conversation conducted from the clients is responsible (i.e. no yelling, cursing, or intimidations).

Attends all staff meetings when scheduled and reports on time for all meetings and for shift.

Assists in conducting intake interview of all new clients.

Conducts scheduled facility and resident searches.

Performs other related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or G.E.D. and one year experience performing security work or social services work,
or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Valid State Drivers License

First Aid certification.

Training in domestic violence.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of general office procedures and practices.

Knowledge of basic recordkeeping practices and procedures.

Ability to communicate effectively with clients in order to control, lead, and motivate behavior.

Ability to work with the public encompassing all types of behaviors.

Ability to work independently and with limited supervision while enforcing established policies and procedures.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

Ability to read, write and communicate the English language.

Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and calmly while maintaining control and initiating the proper corrective action.

Ability to perform combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis. Distance of travel is usually within the same building.

Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works is performed in a corrections facility where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
