Job Description

Purpose of the Position:

The Marine Engineer executes regular maintenance and repairs onboard the NASA barge Pegasus for the transportation of space fight hardware. The engineer completes daily job assignments, duties and reports on the status of work assignments; contributes to the organization and storage of inspection, maintenance, and repair records in both electronic- NASA and hard copy format. The engineer is responsible for troubleshooting problems as well as designing and implementing solutions. Follows up on jobs and consults with the Marine Operations Manager for directions and support. Reporting to the Marine Operations Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs all aspects of the vessels mechanical, generators, electrical systems, HVAC systems, ballast pumps, pluming and structural
  • Ensures the vessel exceeds all Federal and NASA requirements and standards
  • Maintain all equipment to manufacturers specifications
  • Documents daily inspections, maintenance, and repairs in designated CMMS and ISO record and documentation systems
  • Perform daily vessel servicing, fluid level checks, and functional checks on all operating systems
  • Assist with scheduled haul outs and shipyard support
  • Assist and perform maintenance and repairs of steel and aluminum structures, including bolt torquing, cutting and welding (SMAW)
  • Assist in preparation for USACE and ABS inspections
  • Request purchasing through the Marine Operations Manager
  • Keep all engine, bilge, and void spaces clear of debris and fluids, clean and painted
  • Assist in maintaining all vessel safety equipment in compliance of all Federal and NASA regulations
  • Advises Marine Operations Manager of ISO/Training of improvements necessary in systems and logs for corrective actions and prevention of risks regarding health and safety, environmental and quality.
  • General cooking and galley duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned including but not limited to standing underway watch

Requirements:

  • Must possess MMC, USCG Licensed Engineer, minimum BST required, STCW a plus, BCO is a plus but must have ballast control system experience
  • Working knowledge of marine engineering and ship repair including but not limited to diesel engines, generators up to 200kw, mechanical, ballast systems, electrical both AC and DC, pluming, and MSD systems
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a marine engineer

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Dexterity to operate office equipment as required by the position

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to get along with others in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time
  • Must live within two hours distance to the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans LA
  • Travel will be required
  • Candidates who, in addition to the above, possess specialized skills such as fitting, welding, equipment operating, and  cooking  will be given strong consideration
  • Must pass Federal and NASA background check and obtain a NASA security badge, drug screen and physical
  • Must be a U. S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge
  • Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner
  • Must have, and maintain, a valid driver's license
