Job Description

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

· Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Reconcile all daily labs with Quest system 360 to ensure all labs are accounted for and correct. Update lab requisitions to include new providers as necessary.

· Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods. Draw blood from capillaries by dermal puncture, such as heel or finger stick methods. Collect fluid or tissue samples, using appropriate collection procedures.

· Explain fluid or tissue collection procedures to patients.

· Collect specimens at specific time intervals for tests, such as those assessing therapeutic drug levels.

· Dispose of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.

· Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.

· Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer. Verify that all requests for lab work is ordered under a code that will be covered by insurance. Calculate pay for private-pay patients, and deliver to front desk for payment.

· Ready all specimens for pick up, including a check of all specimens prior to pick up. Document route of specimens from collection to laboratory analysis and diagnosis. Follow up and communicate with laboratory services providers regarding billing questions or discrepancies.

· Ensure Quest system is complete and accurate.

· Maintain a schedule of all blood draws for the day.

· Organize or clean blood-drawing trays, ensuring that all instruments are sterile and all needles, syringes, or related items are of first-time use.

· Provide sample analysis results to physicians to assist diagnosis.

· Maintain all lab equipment in good working condition. Check instruments on a weekly basis and re-autoclave as necessary. Responsible for daily autoclaving duties. Complete monthly autoclave check, and record in log book

· Submit all requested information to laboratory services providers on a daily basis, and more frequently as needed or requested.

· Provide all requested information to laboratory services providers, upon request.

· Ensure laboratory service providers and company staff are aware of company holiday hours.

· Ensure the lab is prepared each day and ready for use in a timely manner.

· Complete monthly inventory of laboratory services providers supplies, maintain par levels, and reorder as needed.

· Ensure Lab/DI tracker is up to date and send letters to patient per protocol.

· Other duties as assigned.

Education/Licensing/Training:

· High School Diploma or Equivalent.

· Current California State Phlebotomy Certificate or Certified Medical Assistant Certificate is required.

Physical Demands:

· Standing/Walking: Up to 90% of the workday consists of stand/walking on tile and cement floors while performing duties.

· Sitting: Up to 20% of the workday may be spent sitting answering the telephone, calling out prescriptions and referrals.

· Lifting: Lifting may include up to 25lbs. in moving equipment or assisting disabled patients. 5% of the day involves lifting requiring a full range of motion.

· Carrying: Up to 25% of the day may include carrying objects weighting up to 10lbs., this may include carrying charts and equipment, and newborn babies for procedures.

· Pushing/Pulling: Up to 5% of the day may require pushing or pulling equipment, drawers, carts, and exam table stirrups.

· Climbing: No more than 1% of the time may include climbing one flight of stairs.

· Balancing: Up to 1% of the time may be required to use a footstool in retrieving supplies.

· Stooping/Kneeling: Up to 5% of the workday is spent stooping or kneeling to open drawers and gathering equipment.

· Bending: Up to 25% of the workday may be spent in bending at the waist picking up charts and supplies.

· Reaching/Stretching: Up to 3% of the time may require or stretching to retrieve equipment or medications on shelves.

· Handling: Hand and wrist movement is required 50% of the workday in holding charts and supplies.

· Fingering: Up to 50% of the workday involves writing in the chart, receiving and sending messages.

· Feeling: Normal tactile feeling is required to perform all job duties, including taking pulses.

· Twisting: Up to 5% of the day may be required in retrieving supplies or equipment.

· Talking: Average ability and fluency in English is required in communicating with patients, staff, and outside agencies, such as pharmacies and physicians’ offices.

· Hearing: Average ability is required in answering the telephone and performing all job duties (particularly taking blood pressures and using a stethoscope).

· Seeing: Average ability is required to read and follow instructions and assisting patients.
