VETERINARY ASSISTANT

(unbenefited position during training)

 
$16.7445 to $20.7436 per hour, generous benefits package, including 14% agency contribution to retirement. (unbenefited position during 6 month training period) ( APPLY ONLINE OR IN PERSON) - 9777 Seaaca St. Downey, CA 90241.

 

DEFINITION:

Under direct supervision of the Veterinary Clinic Supervisor, assists the registered veterinary technicians (RVT), veterinarians, and receptionists in all duties in the veterinary division. Responsible for the quality of humane and professional treatment of all animals in the care of SEAACA including the maintenance and care of animals, monitoring of animals for signs of illness, disease, or injury; cleaning, disinfection, and sanitation of cages and work areas; sterilizes laboratory and surgical instruments and equipment; assists veterinarians with healthcare duties; provides routine post-operative care; administers medication orally or topically; prepares samples for laboratory examination under the supervision of a veterinarian or licensed veterinary technician.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Observes animals in animal care center custody for signs of disease, illness, or injury and reports these to Veterinarian.
  • Feeds, waters, and monitors animals for signs of illness, disease, or injury under Veterinary care.
  • Cleans disinfects, and sanitizes cages, work areas, laundry, laboratory equipment, and surgical equipment. Maintains Veterinary division facilities.
  • Prepares animals for treatment or surgery and assists Veterinarians during treatment or surgery.
  • Assists veterinarians in a variety of healthcare duties, including injections, venipuncture, and wound dressing.
  • Prepares examination or treatment room, and holds or restrains animal during treatment. 
  • Intake and release of privately owned animals entering the animal care center for Veterinary care.
  • Provides agency and general information over the counter and on the telephone. Gives written/verbal information and instruction to the public at the front counter.
  • Provide professional/courteous customer service to clients.
  • Processes monetary transactions for veterinary treatments and other services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EXAMINATIONS:

  • High School Graduation, G.E.D., or a combination of education and related experience with a total of twelve years.
  • Ability to pass a specified written test with a minimum score of 70%.
  • Demonstrates a competent work history and attendance record in good standing.
  • Applicants must have a working knowledge of a typing keyboard.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination and background check.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Recognize common domestic animal species and breeds and exotics.
  • Describe and recognize symptoms of common diseases of small domestic animals and exotics.
  • Describe and recognize animal life stages and their nutritional requirements.
  • Describe and recognize proper methods of safely handling and restraining a wide variety of animals.
  • Identify common surgical instruments, tools, and veterinary equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard preventative care for common domestic animals.
  • Knowledge of common routine surgical procedures for common domestic animals.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with and establish and maintain effective, cooperative relations with the City Officials, the public, and fellow employees.
  • Recognize the legality of the veterinary-client-patient relationship and understand and observe the legal boundaries of veterinary health care.
  • Ability to handle monetary transactions accurately.
  • Ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergencies.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
  • Ability to work various hours including evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures, spelling, and a good command of the English language.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn to operate a multi-line telephone system and computerized record-keeping system.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn standard public safety radio code system.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and equipment.
  • Skill in multitasking, coordinating simultaneous mental, manual and visual activities.

 

PHYSICAL CLASSIFICATIONS/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to lift 75 pounds as demonstrated by a challenge test.
  • Ability to hear and determine the direction of the sound, distinguish colors, and maintain balance.
  • Must be able to tolerate loud animal noises and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to work with aggressive and/or infected animals, animal wastes and biological material, controlled substances, and contagious diseases.
  • Extensive direct handling, carrying, and restraining of animals, both large and small, and carrying of supplies and equipment.
  • Extensive stooping, crawling, bending, twisting, and carrying.
  • Endurance is sufficient for standing and walking during the entire duty shift.
  • Compose, prepare and read typewritten or handwritten documents.
  • Manual dexterity is sufficient for handwritten records and communications and for computer entry.
  • Physical agility is sufficient to pursue, apprehend and control animals that are evading capture.

 

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

The applicant may be required to obtain and maintain a valid Veterinary Controlled Substance Permit. 

 

Working hours and days off may be rotated and includes working weekends and Holidays. Hours may be for various durations, up to 12 hours a day, however, normally do not exceed eighty (80) hours in any two-week period.

 

On a continuous basis, sit at a desk in front of a computer screen; intermittently twist to reach equipment or supplies surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone and computer keyboard on a daily basis; walking, bending, stooping, and reaching to access files and materials; and intermittently lift or carry boxes weighing 25 to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move 75 pounds or more.

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
