What you will be doing:

As a GIS Analyst within the Data Modernization & Innovation Office (DMIO), reporting to the Data Analytics Manager, this role falls under the titles of GIS Analyst 1, GIS Analyst 2, or GIS Analyst 3. The primary responsibilities involve utilizing Esri geographic information systems (GIS) applications, development tools, and business intelligence applications. The objective is to efficiently plan, organize, generate, analyze, and visualize geospatial data. This encompasses a range of information, including but not limited to highways, airports, marine routes, and various department-wide assets like bridges, pavements, signs, airports, harbors, and more.


Depending on your experience, you may be hired as either the GIS Analyst 1, 2, or 3. Below is a summary of duties at each level.


GIS Analyst 1:

This role is suitable for beginners, and the tasks involve creating, updating, and designing maps under overall supervision. Responsibilities also include analyzing data, conducting cross-asset analysis, working with thematic data layers, and performing spatial analysis using established analytical tools.


GIS Analyst 2:

GIS Analysts 2 operate at an advanced level, designing and updating base maps and thematic data layers with proficiency. They create efficient workflows, conduct spatial analysis, and handle complex data processing. Their responsibilities include collaborating with end-users, providing training, managing GIS databases, verifying data accuracy, and incorporating remotely sensed imagery. They contribute to GIS software enhancements, apply cartographic design principles, and enhance imagery using processing software, showcasing comprehensive expertise in the field.


GIS Analyst 3:

The role involves creating and updating complex base maps and thematic data layers, often requiring creativity and advanced GIS skills. Analysts perform extensive spatial analysis, including higher-level queries and statistical modeling. They also handle web-based GIS interfaces, advise on GIS-related processes, and provide expert-level consultations. Responsibilities include data manipulation, geodatabase creation, access control for spatial databases, and collaboration with IT on data quality standards. The role involves writing macro-level commands, workflow automation, and advising on spatial database architecture. Tasks also include geo-rectifying imagery, spectral analysis, and providing advanced GIS training for division staff.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1, 2 or 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
