AGRICULTURAL UTILITY MECHANIC; Sugar Refinery; CO

Position Overview

The Ag Utility Mechanic is responsible for maintaining all pile ground equipment, heavy machinery, and ventilation systems. This includes performing preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and assisting other Ag maintenance staff with their equipment and pile grounds. Additionally, the Ag Utility Mechanic will support the factory by repairing, maintaining, and transporting heavy equipment between factory locations. The position involves regular travel to pile grounds in Northeastern Colorado and Southwestern Nebraska, with trips to receiving stations and factory sites (1 factory site and 14 receiving stations) from April to November, requiring 50-70% of workdays to be spent traveling. From December to April, travel is reduced to 5%, with a focus on equipment repair, rebuilding, and preventative maintenance. Reports to the Ag Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions

• Maintain consistent and timely attendance and demonstrate reliability.
• Oversee the maintenance of all pile ground equipment, including belt conveyors, screens, chains, sprockets, tracks, and bearings.
• Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, equipment setup, and dismantling tasks as needed.
• Maintain and repair the pulp loader and rebuild conveyor idlers/rollers and other equipment components.
• Provide repair and maintenance support for factory heavy equipment when required.
• Utilize various hand and power tools for maintenance tasks.
• Be available to work nights and weekends as necessary.
• Operate independently in remote locations with minimal supervision.
• Maintain active communication with supervisors and team members.
• Demonstrate strong organizational skills, multitasking ability, and self-motivation.
• Manage time effectively and efficiently.
• Display strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Read and comprehend technical manuals.
• Pay close attention to detail in all work.
• Respond promptly to emergency repair situations.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills & Experience Requirements

• A two-year technical degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
• CDL Class A Driver’s License with tanker and hazmat endorsements, or the ability to obtain these within six months of hire.
• Ability to pass a welding certification for structural A.W.S. D1.1 vertical and overhead welding.
• Proficiency in oxy/acetylene cutting, welding, and fabrication.
• Knowledge or willingness to learn troubleshooting of 480-volt electrical systems.
• Experience operating and maintaining forklifts and loaders.
• Completion of NCCO crane certification is required for Montana-based employees.
• Experience or willingness to learn crane operations and rigging.
• Strong maintenance/mechanical experience with heavy equipment, conveyors, belts, tracks, bearings, sprockets, and electrical components.
• Proven troubleshooting skills and the ability to repair equipment.
• Friendly, results-oriented, and collaborative personality.

Travel Requirements

• Regular travel to assigned pile grounds and locations:
• April to September: 20%
• September to November: 70%
• December to April: 5%
